Naugatuck, CT George Zonas, 92, died peacefully on Sunday, July 24, 2016 at Beacon Brook Health Center.
George was born in Waterbury, CT on March 2, 1924 a son of the late Walter and Mary (Baranowska) Zonas and lived in Naugatuck all of his life. A World War II U.S. Army Air Force Veteran; George was a retired CT State Trooper, having served for 18 years and he also worked for 14 years as an investigator for the Public Defender’s Office. George was a member of the B.P.O.Elks # 967 for 57 years and a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church.
George is survived by his sister, Helen Tamosaitis; his nephew, Alec Zonas; his niece, Virginia Eggbert and several other nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his sister, Anna Ezenski and his brothers, Alex Zonas and John Zonas.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 5, 2016 at 11:00am at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church Street, Naugatuck. Everyone is asked to please meet directly at Church. Burial with military honors will follow in St. James Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday, August 4, 2016 from 6:00 to 8:00pm at the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Avenue, Naugatuck. Members of the Naugatuck Veterans Council will assemble at the funeral home Thursday at 7:00pm. The Naugatuck Elks Ritual will be Thursday at 7:30pm.
