Mr. W. Edward Dowling, 67, of Cheshire, a managing director of UHY Advisors and CPA's passed away suddenly on July 5, 2009 at Saint Mary's Hospital in Waterbury. He was the husband of Linda (Membrino) Dowling.
Mr. Dowling was born September 30, 1941 in Waterbury a son of the late Edward and Marion (Ahearn) Dowling and has been a Cheshire resident since 1980. He attended Waterbury schools and was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School. On June 27, 1964 he was united in marriage to Linda Rose Membrino. He also was a graduate of Providence College earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. He served in the military as First Lieutenant in the US Army during the Vietnam War. Ed led an accomplished professional life as a CPA. He was the partner in charge of the New Haven office of Deloitte and Touche, LLP a prominent international accounting and consulting firm. In addition he also served as the National Director of Professional Services to Law Firms. He then worked with Centerprise and UHY Advisors N.E., LLC as a partner in his later years.
He was involved in numerous Civic Memberships acting as a distinguished leader. He was Board Chair of the United Way of Greater New Haven, and served as the Chair of the South Central Connecticut Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was Treasurer of the Connecticut Yankee Council of the Boy Scouts of America and Acts Council of New Haven. He was also a trustee of Saint Raphael Hospital and received a prestigious Public Service Award from the AICPA and CSCPA. In addition he served as the Chairman of the Central Connecticut Coast YMCA. He is a member of the Board of Governors of the Quinnipiac Club and serves on the Committee of the Quinnipiac College Business School.
He was a loving family man who enjoyed various activities including basketball, baseball, crossword puzzles, golfing, guitar and photography. He also enjoyed Ray Charles, country music and loved telling stories and jokes and was a known raconteur. A devout Roman catholic, Ed was a former Communicant of Our Lady of Loreto Church in Waterbury, where he served as a Minister of the Eucharist and is currently a Communicant of Saint Bridget Church in Cheshire. A gentle, steady man who tried to live according to Christian principles, Ed was actively involved in assisting others in a very compassionate manner. He will be missed by his family and everyone who knew him and was touched by his beautiful spirit.
Besides his wife Linda of 45 years he leaves his three children, Sean P. Dowling of Cheshire, Brian E. Dowling of Wallingford and Bonnie L. Dowling of Scottsdale, AZ, his sister Betsi Mariani of Harwinton and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Dowling will be celebrated Friday July 10 at 10a.m. at Saint Bridget Church 175 Main Street in Cheshire. Friends are asked to meet directly at the Church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Waterbury.
