NAUGATUCK — Janice Havican Triano passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 12, 2014, at Saint Mary's Hospital. She was the widow of Charles E. Triano.

Mrs. Triano was born in Waterbury on Nov. 14, 1936, daughter of the late Raymond and Emily (Herbst) Havican. She graduated from Crosby High School ('54) and Central Connecticut State University with a Bachelor of Science in elementary education. She also earned a Master of Arts in education from the University of Connecticut. In addition, she earned sixth-year certificates in school administration from Southern Connecticut State University and reading language arts from Central Connecticut State University.

In her early years as an educator, Mrs. Triano taught at Polk School in Watertown and for the U.S. government in Zweibrucken, Germany. In Naugatuck, she had been a member of the faculty at Cross Street School, served as the first director of Naugatuck's school-year Head Start program, and as coordinator of remedial and bilingual programs. She also instituted the Reading is Fundamental program in Naugatuck, providing for free books for all students in the elementary schools.

Following her retirement as a language arts consultant for the Naugatuck school system, Mrs. Triano was an assessor of new teachers for the Connecticut State Department of Education and was employed by the University of Bridgeport as a supervisor of student teachers. She was also a volunteer at the Palace Theater and Waterbury Symphony and a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish.

She is survived by three children, Charles E. Triano Jr. and his wife, Anne, James R. Triano and his wife, Michelle, and Pamela M. Triano and her husband, Darren Raymond-Lombardo; and seven grandchildren, Brendan, Maxwell, Craig, Blake, Devin, Aiden and Ryan. She is also survived by a brother, Raymond Havican of Wallingford; a sister, Audrey Barberet and her husband, Gene, of Storrs; and a brother-in-law, Albert Burt of Naugatuck. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church on Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. Everyone is asked to meet directly at church. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery, Naugatuck. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave., Naugatuck.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center in Waterbury or the University of Connecticut Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) Sustainability Fund.
