PROSPECT- Toby Alpert Spalter, 76, passed away unexpectedly Sunday June 5, 2016 at St. Mary’s Hospital, in Waterbury, Connecticut. She was the loving wife of William Joel Spalter. They were married for fifty five years.
Toby was born September 24, 1939 in New Haven, CT. She was one of 3 daughters and one son born to the late Leonard and Yetta (Lebowitz) Alpert. The family were prominent members of the New Haven Orchard Street Shul. Toby was a graduate of Hillhouse High School Class of 1957.
For Toby, nothing was more important than her family. For years, she helped organize and participate in the family’s mishpucka club, which brought family and friends together on a regular basis. Toby’s social life largely centered around spending time with family, although she was still in contact with high school friends. Vacations for Toby typically meant traveling, with her husband to Europe and Asia and with her sisters to a variety of U.S. destinations.
Toby met her husband while on vacation in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. After they married, Toby supported Bill while he attended R.I.T. by working as a legal secretary. Years later, she went back to school herself and received Paralegal Certification from the University of New Haven. Eventually, Toby established her own business as a freelance Paralegal with multiple Lawyers as her clients.
In her free time Toby was an avid reader, baker and loved making counted cross stitch art work. Toby loved fifty’s rock and roll music but most especially Little Richard and Sammy Davis Jr. As a lifelong Democrat, Toby supported social and political equality for all people.
Toby evolved a strong belief that women should be able to do anything a man can do. She spent many Thanksgiving and Passover meals arguing this point. Toby always believed it was important to have women of great accomplishments in the public view. She would have been very pleased that Hillary Clinton is her party's presumptive nominee for President.
Besides her loving husband she is survived by two sons Jeffrey Spalter of East Haven, and Craig and his wife Lauren Spalter of Orange County, CA; a sister Ruth Salter of Illinois; and two grandsons, Cole and Levi Spalter, and numerous nieces and nephews. Toby was predeceased by her brother Harold Alpert, and her sister Zelma Campbell.

The family will sit shiva on Wednesday and Thursday, June 15 and 16. The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Waterbury, 9 Holmes Ave, 06710, is assisting the family with arrangements.
