Americo Tavares

Naugatuck, CT Americo Tavares, 94, husband of the late Maria Fernandes Tavares, died peacefully on April 13, 2022 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Americo was born September 9, 1927 in Torreira, Portugal son of the late Americo A. and Alzira Sebolao Tavares and had lived in Naugatuck for the past 62 years. Americo was a retired machine operator and member of Local 478, I.U.O.E. He was a devout parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church and a former member of Clube Uniao Portuguesa. Americo loved his family and especially enjoyed traveling with his wife every summer to their home in Torreira, Portugal.

Americo is survived by his daughters, Maria Magalhaes (Jack) and Domingas Rebelo (Celestino); his son, Americo Tavares; his 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; his sister in law, Ludovina Tavares and his many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his wife and his parents, Americo was predeceased by his brothers, Felipe Tavares and Alfredo Tavares and his sister, Alzira Sebolao.

The family would like to give special thanks to Americo’s caregiver, Ines Ribeiro, for all the love and support she showed towards our beloved father and family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:00am at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 2071 Baldwin Street, Waterbury. Everyone is kindly asked to meet directly at church. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Naugatuck. Calling hours are Monday from 5:00 to 8:00pm at the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Avenue, Naugatuck.
