WATERBURY - Andrew Szilvasy Jr., age 66, of Waterbury, passed away on Friday, April 30, 2010, surrounded by his loving family following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born in Bridgeport on Aug. 25, 1943, he was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Vietnam War. After the war, he worked as a Q.C. inspector at General Electric and then at Rockbestos-Surprenant until retirement last year.
Andy will be remembered for his passionate love of sports. Volunteering as coach for Little League baseball in Bridgeport for many years, he coached his teams to multiple championships.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 26 years, Betty, and three cherished children: son, Andrew Szilvasy III and his wife, Paula, of Boston, Mass.; son, Steven Szilvasy; and daughter, Samantha Szilvasy, the latter two of Waterbury. He also leaves behind his brother, Gerald and his wife, Joyce, of Florida; brother, Ted Becker and his wife, Ella, of Vermont; his sister, Alicia Goldfarb and her husband, Joel, of South Windsor; sister-in-law, Theresa Perri of Waterbury; sister-in-law, Barbara Pecor and her husband, Michael, of Stratford; brother-in-law, Bill Allen of Bridgeport; many nieces and nephews as well as countless friends. He was predeceased by his mother, Ernestine Becker, and his father, Andrew Szilvasy Sr. Andy will also be sadly missed by his beloved dog, Louie.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at 10 a.m. at the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery Chapel, Bow Lane, Middletown. Family and friends are asked to please meet directly at the chapel. Burial will follow in the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery. Friends may call at the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 26 Waterbury Road, Route 69, Prospect, on Tuesday, May 4, from 6 to 8 p.m.
