PROSPECT - Raymond R. Steinfeld Sr., 70, of Prospect, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011, at VITAS Hospice in Saint Mary's Hospital. He was the husband of the late Patricia (Day) Steinfeld.

Mr. Steinfeld was born May 12, 1941, in Waterbury, son of the late Benjamin and Victoria Steinfeld. He was raised in Wolcott and built his home in Prospect in 1969 to raise his family. Ray worked at Anaconda Brass, Scotts Pools and at Bozzuto's Inc. as a truck driver and transportation manager before retiring to care for his wife, Patricia.

Raymond was an extreme family man, being involved in every aspect of his family's activities. He was a dedicated family man who took great pride in his six beautiful children. While raising his children, he was a great provider, often working two to three jobs to make sure they wanted for nothing. He was not just a father, but a mentor, coach and friend to his children. Somehow, there was always time for him to attend and support each of them in their sporting events, often coaching them from the sidelines and then coaching his own women's softball team, "Our Gang", of which his two daughters and many close friends were members.

Besides being active with his children, he was a compassionate caregiver to his late wife, Patricia, for nearly 20 years. He was also a humorous prankster to his family and friends, always providing laughter and a ray of sunshine wherever he was.

When Ray wasn't enjoying his children's events and caring for his wife, he enjoyed fishing, gardening, horse shoes and golfing. Ray was always referred to as the MASTER of both fishing and gardening, with many people picking his brain for his secrets to such success in both areas.

Besides his late wife, Patricia, he leaves six proud children, his sons, his namesake, the late Raymond Steinfeld Jr. and his wife, Betty, of Woodbury, Kenneth Steinfeld and his wife, Rita, of Prospect, James Steinfeld and his wife, Christine, of Wolcott and Michael Steinfeld and his wife, Kerry, of Woodbridge, and two daughters, Patricia Monnerat and her husband, Stephen, and Laurie Herbort and her late husband, Stephen, both of Wolcott; along with 16 extremely proud grandchildren, his companion, Lea Dawson, and many friends.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday morning at New Pine Grove Cemetery, 390 Meriden Road, Waterbury, at 10 a.m. All are asked to meet at the cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 26 Waterbury Road, Route 69, Prospect.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the VITAS Hospice Charitable Fund, 1579 Straits Tpke., Unit C, Middlebury 06726. For online condolences, please log on to www.buckmillerbrothers.com.
