Naugatuck, CT Frederick E. Sargeant, 89, husband of the late Cele (Holton) Sargeant for 47 years, died peacefully January 6, 2024 at St. Mary’s Hospital.
Fred was born September 26, 1934 in Naugatuck, CT son of the late Elliott and Helen (McDermott) Sargeant and had lived in Naugatuck all of his life. Fred was raised in Naugatuck with a Catholic upbringing and graduated from Naugatuck High School. Fred worked as a prison guard at Cheshire Reformatory and then worked as a firefighter, night watchman and in chemical production at the chemical division of Uniroyal, Inc., where he had worked for 31 years before retiring in 1997. Fred also enjoyed working as a school crossing guard at City Hill Middle School. Fred was a proud United States Navy Veteran, having served aboard the USS Intrepid.
Fred proudly served as a burgess in Naugatuck; he volunteered in Naugatuck Youth Baseball and he coached in the Naugatuck Junior Football League.
Fred is survived by his sons and daughters in law, Fred “Ricky” Sargeant and his wife, Shannon; Howard Sargeant and his wife, Laurie and Christopher Sargeant and his wife, Kelli; his grandchildren, Skylar, Matthew, Hannah, Madison and Bodie Sargeant. In addition to his wife and his parents, Fred was predeceased by his son, Sean Sargeant and his sister, Carolyn Wilcox.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10:00am at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church Street, Naugatuck. Everyone attending is kindly asked to please meet directly at church. Burial with military honors will follow in St. James Cemetery, Cross Street, Naugatuck. Calling hours are Thursday from 4-7pm at the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Avenue, Naugatuck. Members of the Naugatuck Veterans Council will assemble at the funeral home Thursday at 6:30pm.
