Cheshire - Robert William McAviney Sr., 82, of Hawthorne Drive, passed away Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at Elim Park Baptist Home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Beatrice (Esposito) McAviney.
Mr. McAviney was born February 26, 1927 in New Haven, the son of the late William T. and Sarah (Roache) McAviney. He was a World War II Army Veteran and was an American Legion and VFW member. He was employed as a salesman for Hartz Mountain and N&D Sports. He was an avid Yankees, Bruins and Giants fan and had coached his son's baseball teams as well as adult softball. Until 2007 he was still actively working major sporting events selling novelty items.
Besides his wife of 58 years, Mr. McAviney is survived by his sons Robert McAviney Jr. and Jean Bernard of Cheshire; Marc and Karen McAviney of Cheshire; four grandchildren Alyssa, Robert III, Heather, and Brian McAviney as well as many nieces and nephews. Mr. McAviney is preceded by his sister Helen Smith.
Arrangements ' Funeral services will be held on Friday December 18, 2009, 9:15 from the Alderson Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 S. Main St. to St. Thomas Becket Church for Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Beaverdale Cemetery in Hamden. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
