Robert “Woody” Wood, 82, of Cheshire, beloved husband of Sandra Wood, passed away Thursday, August 13, 2015 at home. He was the devoted husband for over 44 years of Sandy (Buechele) Wood. Born January 14th, 1933 in New Bedford, MA. He was the son of the late Robert and Beatrice (Hargraves) Wood.
Robert’s entire life was dedicated to serving others. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was one of the hardest working people you would ever meet. He worked for the Cheshire Post Office for 45 years, and Cheshire Ambulance and Campion Ambulance as an Emergency Medical Technician for over 25 years. Robert was a Life Member of the Cheshire Fire Department, providing over 50 years of service and previously held the position of Secretary for Headquarters Company 1. In 1982 he received a letter of commendation for his service during a storm that resulted in severe flooding conditions. Even after retirement you couldn’t slow him down. He worked at Awards of Elegance in Southington and served as President of the Hartford Wolfpack Booster Club. He was incredibly respected, admired and loved by all who met him. Robert was an avid sports fan and loved the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, New York Rangers, and Hartford Wolfpack. He also loved NASCAR and had attended the races in Charlotte, NC for 52 years.
In addition to his wife, Robert is survived by his four children. Tod Wood and his wife Jeth of Newington; Scott Wood of Torrington; Renee’ Wood Hearn and her husband John of Plainville; and Traci Wood and her significant other Bryan Trudell. He is also survived by his two grandchildren, Trey and Erin, his sister, Marcia Wordell of Mattapoisette, MA, his father-in-law, Al Palumbo of Southington and many nieces, nephews, a brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, and his faithful furry bff, Kiko. He is predeceased by his mother-in-law, Pearl Palumbo and his brothers-in-law, Chuck Wordell and Ron Buechele.
With his quick wit, dedication to his family and commitment to his community, the loss of Robert will be felt forever and all those who knew him will never be the same.
Robert’s funeral procession will leave the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home, 615 So. Main St., Cheshire, CT 06410 on Monday August 17, 2015 at 10AM for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11AM in Holy Trinity Church, 200 Summer Street in Plantsville. Interment will follow in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Plantsville with Full Military Honors. Friends may greet the family at the funeral home on Sunday, August 16 at 4PM to 7PM.
