Naugatuck, CT Gerald Alphonse "Big Terry" Raimo, born on November 10, 1947, and a beloved figure in the Naugatuck community, passed away on August 24, 2023. He leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and community spirit that will forever be cherished.
Terry is survived by his four loving children; Terry, Eddy, Patrick, and Angela. His dedication to his family was immeasurable, and his unwavering support and guidance will be remembered fondly. He is also survived by two cherished grandchildren, Lexi and Justin, who brought immense joy to his life, as well as his beloved sister Ann Zimkus; his nieces, Tanya Zimkus and Alanna Frenis. Terry’s former wife and the mother of their four children, Sherri Lynn Raimo, remains a part of his extended family, and their shared history is a testament to the enduring bonds of family.
A proud graduate of the Naugatuck High School Class of 1963, Terry furthered his education at the University of New Haven, focusing on business studies. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to become a successful owner and operator of multiple businesses. Among his notable accomplishments, he was best known as the proprietor of Flowers Plus (“The Farm Market”) at 129 Rubber Avenue in Naugatuck, CT for 51 years. His flower shop was more than a business; it was a cornerstone of the local community.
Terry's dedication to his community was evident through his countless donations of Christmas trees, pumpkins, fireworks, and a myriad of flowers to local schools, churches, and community organizations over the years. He believed in the power of nature's beauty to uplift spirits and foster a sense of togetherness. His advocacy for the beautification of Naugatuck was evident in his collaborations with the Naugatuck Garden Club, where his contributions will be remembered for generations to come.
Beyond his business endeavors and community involvement, Terry's impact extended to his role as a State's Marshal for more than 25 years. As an officer of the court, his exemplified integrity, compassion, and a commitment to justice was a reflection of his deep-seated belief in the betterment of his community.
Among others, Terry was an active member of the Eagles Club and the Freemasons' Salem Shepherd Lodge. These associations not only provided him with companionship but also allowed him to further nurture the connections he held dear.
Terry will be remembered as a pillar of strength, compassion, and community devotion. His legacy will continue to flourish through the lives he touched and the values he instilled in those who had the privilege of knowing him. One could never predict the nuggets of wisdom he would impart on you over an afternoon cup of coffee or late night trumpet player. As we bid farewell to a remarkable man, let us also celebrate the profound impact he had on his family, friends, and the town he held so dear.
Calling hours will be Friday, September 1, 2023 from 5:00 to 7:00pm, with a service immediately following at 7:00pm at the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Avenue, Naugatuck. Burial will be at a later date. Terry’s family invites everyone to join them immediately following the service at Brady’s Restaurant, 152 Church Street, Naugatuck.
