PROSPECT — Mr. Michael A. Porzio Sr., 79, died Thursday, March 17, 2011, at his home. He was the husband of Suzanne (Crocco) Porzio.
Mr. Porzio was born Nov. 3, 1931, in Watertown, the son of the late Vincenzo Porzio and Maria (Spino) Porzio. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School and attended Post College until he joined the Air Force in 1953 during the Korean conflict. Shortly after his service in the military, he and his brothers established Porzio Inc., a wholesale veal distributing company which operated in Waterbury for more than 40 years.
He became a Eucharistic minister at St. Anthony's Church in Prospect and also served on the parish council for many years. He traveled extensively with Intersport U.S.A., whose mission it was to establish and improve relationships between young athletes in the U.S., Russia, Cuba and other countries.
He was generous with his time in years past, providing audio support for the Prospectors, a theatrical company associated with St. Anthony's Church, the Living Witness Musical Production presented in many churches in this area, and the Naugatuck Valley Community College chorus concerts.
In addition to his wife, he leaves two sons, Michael Jr. of Waterbury, and Vincent of Prospect; his three daughters, Donna Kern of Hamden, Audrey Porzio of Prospect, and Lisa Porzio of Bethany; his son-in-law, Scott Kern; daughter-in-law, Louise Porzio; and grandchildren, Taryn Porzio, Vincent Porzio Jr., Madeline Kern and Noah Kern. He also leaves his sister, Susan Corcoran of Mount Vernon, N.Y., his brother, Donald Porzio of Waterbury, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Salvatore, Ralph and Anthony, and two sisters, Eleanor Orso and Anna DiCapua.
A funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Monday, March 21, 2011, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 309 South Main St., Waterbury. Family and friends are asked to please meet directly at the church. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Family and friends may call at the Buckmiller Brothers Funeral Home, 26 Waterbury Road, Route 69, Prospect, on Sunday, March 20, 2011, from 4 to 7 p.m.
