Mr. Paul D. Smith, 84, of Naugatuck, died peacefully at his home late Sunday afternoon Mar. 15, 2009. He was the loving husband of the late Dorothy C. (Parks) Smith who passed away in 2005 after 59 years of marriage.
Mr. Smith was born in Altoona, PA., Dec. 30, 1924, the son of the late Chester and Ella (Burtnett) Smith and was educated in the Altoona school system. He was a proud Marine Corps. Veteran of World War II, enlisting in 1943 and having served as a Sergeant with the Marine Aviation Unit, participating in the Bismark,- Archipelago Operations, in the consolidation of the Northern Solomon Islands and in the Philippines Campaign. had been a Naugatuck resident since 1956, moving here from Pennsylvania. He retired in 1988 from Timex, Inc., with over 30 years of service as a Quality Control Engineer, having traveled all over the world for the company. After retirement he was an active volunteer at the Timex Expo Museum. He was a dedicated and faithful member of the United Methodist Church of Naugatuck, having been active in all aspects of the church. He enjoyed gardening and working in his yard. He was a former member of the Glendale Community Club.
He leaves two sons, Ronald P. Smith of Waterbury, and Randall J. Smith and his wife Marilyn of Tucson, AZ.; two daughters, Cheryl A. Savarese and her husband Joseph, and Beverly D. Carrington and her husband William; 11 grandchildren, Daniel Smith, Tammy Dwy, Jeff and Kate Savarese, Jarrett and Vicki Saverese, Jason Savarese and his fianc, Ruth Sommer, Justin Savarese, Melissa Carrington, Lindsay Carrington, Lauren Carrington, Eli Smith, and Ian Smith; and 8 great-grandchildren.
A funeral Service will be held on Saturday Mar 21, 2009 at 10 am at the United Methodist Church of Naugatuck, 214 Meadow St. Burial with full military honors will be in Grove Cemetery, Naugatuck, immediately following the service. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, 214 Meadow St., Naugatuck, 06770. The Alderson Funeral Home of Naugatuck, 201 Meadow St. is in charge of arrangements.
