Mrs. Lorraine G. Mulhall RN
Retired, Naugatuck Visiting Nurses Association

Naugatuck, CT Lorraine Rose Giancarli Mulhall, 92, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on December 28, 2022.

Lorraine was the widow of Peter F. Mulhall Jr. and the daughter of the late Palma (Generali) and Domenic Giancarli. She was born in Naugatuck on December 5th, 1930. She attended Groveside Elementary School, Salem School and graduated from Naugatuck High School Class of 1948 while working at Rosenblatt’s Department Store and playing girls high school basketball. She was a 1951 graduate of Saint Mary’s School of Nursing, where she obtained her Registered Nurse licensure.

She married Peter F Mulhall on June 7th, 1952, at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Naugatuck. Lorraine left her nursing position at Saint Mary’s to accompany her husband, who was in the Air Force stationed at March Air Force Base, Riverside, CA during the Korean Conflict. She held a RN position at Riverside General during that time. After her husband’s military service, she returned to Naugatuck and resumed her RN position on the maternity ward at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury. Lorraine had the opportunity to serve the Naugatuck community accepting a position with the Visiting Nurses Association, and subsequently became the Director of Clinical Supervision, until her retirement in 1997. To attain the Clinical Supervisor position, she returned to the classroom at Mattatuck Community College to complete an associate degree awarded at age 58. Lorraine was truly a lifelong learner.

Lorraine was truly a Naugatuck Native and loved her community. She was a devoted member of St. Francis of Assisi Church where she cherished singing in the choir, belonged to Council of Catholic Women, and participated in many school and church activities. She received the Eagles Club Mother of the Year Award in 1981. Lorraine displayed kindness and joy to everyone she met. She always was willing to help anyone she could and was nicknamed “Florence Nightingale” by family, friends, and patients.

She was a zealous fan and supporter of Naugatuck High School sports beginning in her own basketball playing days and continued cheering for her children’s participation in NHS sports. Lorraine had a third wave of fandom for NAUGY sports when her many grandchildren played and exceled in football, soccer, and baseball. Lastly, she was a fanatical supporter of UCONN Huskies Men’s and Women’s basketball teams. A signed Ladies Husky poster ” To Lorraine, the Valley’s biggest fan” was displayed on her front door entrance.
