Beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great-grandmother

Naugatuck, CT Maria P. Moniz, a native of Aveiro, Portugal and the beloved wife of Joseph A. Moniz, who preceded her in death on April 7, 2002 after 56 years of marriage, died peacefully on Sunday, August 23, 2015 at Paradigm of Prospect.
Maria was born on April 3, 1927 in Aveiro, Portugal, a daughter of the late Americo Carvalho Picado and Rita da Costa and had lived in Naugatuck for most of her life. She was a longtime former employee of the footwear division of Uniroyal, Inc. and she also worked for several years at General Data Com until her retirement. Maria was devoted to her family and she loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Maria and Joe were proud to have been able to help many family members from Portugal start a new life in the U.S.A. Maria was a faithful communicant of St. Mary’s Church.
Maria is survived by her son, Joseph Anthony Moniz and his wife Deborah of Hamden; her daughter, Rosemarie Tichon and her husband Brian of Naugatuck; her sister Maria Rodrigues of Naugatuck; her four grandchildren, Suzanne Savage, Rachel Roberts, Felicia and Nicholas Moniz; her two great-grandchildren, Austin and Colten Roberts; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband Joseph, who was her best friend and the love of her life, Maria was predeceased by her sister, Maria da Conceicao Roque, formerly of Naugatuck.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at 10:00am at St. Mary’s Church, 338 North Main Street. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday, August 25, 2015 from 5:00 to 7:00pm at the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Avenue. In lieu of flowers, to honor Maria’s memory, contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Church, 338 North Main Street, Naugatuck, CT 06770, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
