WESTON, FL – Mary Meehan Berry, 93, died peacefully at home on Monday May 20, 2019 after a long illness. She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother.
Mary was born May 29, 1925 in Waterbury, Connecticut, the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Louise Meehan. She was predeceased by her siblings Joseph Meehan, Edward Meehan, Eloise Gunnoud, and George Meehan.
She was a longtime Waterbury resident before moving to Florida in 1995. Mary was an honors graduate of both Crosby High School and Post College. Early in her career, she worked at Citizens & Manufacturers Bank, (Colonial Bank and Trust Company) and after raising her family was employed at Naugatuck Valley Community College.
She taught her children how to work, encouraged them in their academic endeavors, explained and reinforced the meaning of family values, and strongly supported spiritual growth.
In retirement, she traveled extensively in the U.S. and in Europe, visiting Ireland several times. She especially enjoyed cruising, with the Panama Canal trip being one of her favorites.
Mary was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church for over 45 years. She was most active in the Ladies Guild and chaired several fundraising committees.
Throughout her life she had a passion for cooking and sewing. She enjoyed playing Bridge, flower arranging, and was active in the Indoor Garden Club of Connecticut. She volunteered her time as a poll worker on election days.
Mary was a caring, compassionate, and loving person. Her first priority was to create a warm and wonderful home for her husband and children. Meals together were a “must” and she was always ready to prepare something to eat for an out-of-town visitor, relative, or neighbor. She saw her journey in life as something much bigger than herself and was always eager to make one feel part of her family.
Mary is survived by the love of her life, John, her husband of 69 years; her four children, Peter and his wife Suzanne of Naples, FL; Paul and his wife Stephanie of Woodbury, CT; Eileen of Weston, FL; Catherine, and her husband James Barnum of Warren, NJ.
