WATERBURY- Mrs. Maria Mercedes (Vazquez) Garcia-Rivera, 91 of Waterbury, passed away Wednesday morning Jan. 27, 2016 at the VITAS Unit at St. Mary’s Hospital. She was the widow of Luis Torres.
Mrs. Garcia-Rivera was born in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, August 24, 1924, daughter of the late Onofre Garcia-Vazquez and the late Adela Rivera Vera and had been a Waterbury resident for the past 10 years moving here from Puerto Rico. She had formerly worked at the Inter-American University in Puerto Rico.
She leaves her children, Miriam DeJesus of Waterbury, Carmen E. Ortiz of Florida, Nilda Alicea of Long Island, N.Y., and Jose Luis Torres of Puerto Rico; a brother, Jaime Rivera of Puerto Rico; two sisters, Antonia Garcia and Illminada Garcia both of Puerto Rico; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
All services will be private at the convenience of the family. There no calling hours. The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Waterbury, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
