WATERBURY – Manuel C. Magalhaes, 86, passed away at home on February 25, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Rosa (Barros) Magalhaes for 60 years.

Manuel was born in Lourosa, Portugal, on April 23, 1936 to the late Jose C. and Esther (Ribeiro) Magalhaes. He was raised in Portugal where he attended local schools. Manuel served in the Portuguese Army before immigrating to Waterbury in 1969 with his wife, Rosa, to start a new life for their young family.

From a young age Manuel enjoyed Pigeon Racing and it remained his favorite hobby throughout his life. He loved watching and cheering on his favorite soccer team, Porto, and was a member of the Waterbury Portuguese Sport Club. He had a long career as a welder and retired in 1997 from Ansonia Copper and Brass.

In addition to his wife, Rosa, Manuel is survived by his daughters, Rosa Maria Magalhaes and Laura Freitas (Manuel), both of Waterbury; his granddaughter, Ashley Freitas of Waterbury; his grandson, Joseph Freitas (Amy Stafford) of Prospect; his great granddaughter, Madelyn Freitas of Prospect; his siblings, Carmolina Sousa (Delfim) and Arminda Oliveira, both of Waterbury, Joaquim Magalhaes (Maria) of Naugatuck, Adelino Magalhaes (Judith) of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Maria Filippone of Naugatuck, and Americo Magalhaes of Waterbury; his sister-in-law, Fernanda Magalhaes of Waterbury and many nieces, nephews and cousins
In addition to his parents, Manuel was predeceased by his brothers, Jose and Antonio Magalhaes and his brother-in-law, Robert Filippone.

The family would like to give special thanks to Modesta Barroqueiro for the support she gave to the family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 3, 2023, at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 2071 Baldwin Street, Waterbury. Everyone attending is kindly asked to please meet directly at church. Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery in Waterbury. Calling Hours are Thursday, March 2, 2023, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave., Naugatuck.
