Lori was born August 28, 1966, in Waterbury, daughter of Louis and the late Sydel (Bess) Kugell. She was employed by the New Britain Board of Education. Lori graduated from Wolcott High school, class of 1984, she went on to earn an associate’s degree from Hartford College for Women, then graduated from Emerson College in Boston with a degree in speech pathology, followed by a master’s degree from the University of New Haven.

In addition to her father, Lori leaves behind her adored son, Jonah Spector of Wolcott, sisters, Sharon and her husband Thomas Marmelstein of Deep River, and Joanne and her husband Michael Marino of Newington. She will also be missed by her Uncle David and Aunt Carol, nephew Zachary (Patricia) Cohen of West Hartford, cherished nieces Allison Marino of Milford and Danielle Marino of Denver. Lori also leaves behind the love of her life, Gary Newhart, whose support, and unwavering love gave her the strength she needed during difficult days.

Lori had the misfortune of being diagnosed at a young age with Multiple Sclerosis. She spent years fundraising for this diagnosis and participated in many MS walks, first by walking, and later by wheelchair. She was a strong, resilient person who had such bravery and courage. Lori surrounded herself with wonderful, loving, and supportive friends. She was known for her sense of humor, her ability to be positive and see the good in everyone, her loving spirit, and her kindness to all. A special thank you to dear friends Sue and Liz, Candice, and Susan, for always staying close in heart.

Lori’s family would like to thank Mosaic Senior Life for providing Lori with such love and compassion during time there. Her staff felt like family, and we are so appreciative of your care, kindness, and warmth. A special thank you to Fernanda, Theresa, Halima, Emma, and Liz, in Sims House.
