CHESHIRE - Lewis H. Cohen, 69, passed away Saturday July 5, 2014 at Mid-State Medical Center in Meriden, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Renee (Hoffer) Cohen for 47 years and had been together since they met in Brooklyn over 53 years ago.
Mr. Cohen was born September 6, 1944 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late Max and Helen (Shapiro) Cohen. He was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School before continuing his education at City College in New York and obtaining his degree from NYU in Engineering.
After his schooling he worked for various HVAC Manufactures including Trane and Carrier Corporation and quickly rose the ranks. He became a respected leader in the industry and ran the Carrier branch office in Washington, D.C. However, he realized that raising a family with stable roots was most important to him and decided to leave his career at Carrier behind and settle in Cheshire, CT, where he has lived for nearly 40 years. In 1983 he founded Aercon Corporation, a 2nd generation family owned company specializing in HVAC.
His true love and passion were for his family. He was so proud of his children, Adam and Evan and overwhelmingly supported their education, pursuits and dreams. He loved his daughter in laws' Jenifer and Susan Cohen and his five grandchildren with every fiber. He enjoyed telling them stories from his old neighborhood in Brooklyn, playing trivia and card games, but most of all just loved spending time with the people he loved. They traveled together with his grandchildren to wonderful places all over the world and most recently visited Atlantis, Paradise Island last December. He also made every effort to attend his grandchildren's games which gave him tremendous joy and pleasure.
He was also most generous with his time and was an active part of the Cheshire Community serving on the Planning and Zoning Commission for a number of years. During his time with the Planning and Zoning he was an intricate part of Cheshire Library and Norton School improvements and most recently the renovation of the Cheshire Community Pool project.
Besides his wife of 47 years, Mr. Cohen is survived by his children Adam and his wife Jenifer of South Glastonbury and Evan and his wife Susan of Cheshire; his five loving grandchildren Andrew, Daniel, Ethan, Caroline and Elizabeth. He is predeceased by his sister Sheila Schwartz.
