Middlebury ' Mrs. Leona Scannell, 73, of 500 Woodside Avenue passed away peacefully on Friday Dec 26th at Beacon Brook Health Center in Naugatuck after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert T. Scannell. Leona was born March 23, 1935 in Mahanoy City Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of the late Stephen and Mary (Drigan)Barnish. She moved to Waterbury at an early age where she met her husband and raised three sons.
She lived most of her life in Waterbury and retired from the Hemingway Corporation after 25 years. She will be remembered for her willingness to help others, her boundless energy and her love of life. Leona enjoyed local travel, cooking, picking blueberries, caring for her family and spending time with her many good friends.
She is survived by two children, Michael Scannell, his wife Cindy and their two children Peter and Christopher, whom she adored, all of Middlebury; Steven Scannell of New Hampshire; a third son Patrick Scannell was previously deceased; one sister Mary Ellis and her husband John of Mahanoy City Pennsylvania; two brothers, Steven Barnish of Pennsylvania and brother Nick Barnish who is previously deceased.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday Dec. 30th at 9 a.m. from the Alderson Funeral Home of Naugatuck, 201 Meadow Street to St. John of the Cross Church in Middlebury for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
