NAUGATUCK - Mrs. Kathryn L. (West) Smilo, 72, passed away Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011, at Hartford Hospital. She was the loving wife of Alan Richard Smilo.

Mrs. Smilo was born in Concord, New Hampshire September 10, 1938, a daughter of the late Adah (Stevens) and Herbert West of Chichester, New Hampshire. She was a graduate of Keene State Teachers College and the University of Connecticut majoring in elementary education (English and Social Studies). She taught in New Hampshire until moving to Waterbury, CT in 1970 when she went to work for the Cheshire school system. She was a member of the New Hampshire Grange as was the rest of her family. She was retired from teaching in 1980 to raise her family. She returned later to teaching as a substitute in the Cheshire school system.

She was an active member of the Congregational Church of Naugatuck and of N.E.O.N. (the Naugatuck Ecumenical Outreach Network).

Besides her many friends, she leaves her husband of 35 years, Alan Richard Smilo; two daughters, Jessika Suzanne Smilo of Waterbury, CT, and Kerensa Michelle Haag of Kissimmee, Florida and seven grandchildren, Kayla Brianne, Jovani Jose, Jalissa Nereida, Jocelyn Kathryn, Trevor Jason, Alexia Brooke and Evan Miguel, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by 4 brothers and a sister.

A Memorial Services will be held on Tuesday Feb. 22, 2011, at 11 am at the Congregational Church of Naugatuck, 9 Division St. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the Alderson Funeral Home of Naugatuck, 201 Meadow St. on Monday, Feb. 21, 2011 from 5 to 8 pm.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Congregational Church of Naugatuck, 9 Division St.
