Joyce M. LeVasseur, 82 of Southwick in Cheshire, passed away on Sunday February 1,2009 at the Elim Park Baptist Home after a brief illness. She was the wife of Francis E. LeVasseur.
Mrs. LeVasseur was born on April 7, 1926 in Hartford, CT. and is the daughter of Sybil O. McCarthy and the late Francis J. McCarthy. Joyce was a loving wife for 62 years, a devoted mother and sister, and good friend and neighbor to many. She was secretary for the Town of West Hartford in the traffic and engineering division and after retirement became the first director and staff coordinator of Literacy Volunteers of Washington, County, RI. She continued to serve on the Literacy Volunteers board of directors and as a tutor in the organization for many years. She was an avid traveler. Among her overseas trips to Israel, Germany, Hong Kong and Korea, she served as a delegate of the Friendship Force, a cultural exchange program dedicated to the principal that each person can make a contribution to global goodwill.
She is survived by one daughter Jeanne Joyce LeVasseur and her husband David; one sister Sybil E. Bartone of Bolton, CT. Joyce is predeceased by her brother, Francis L. McCarthy.
Calling hours are on Wednesday from 4 to 7 PM at the Slater Funeral Home, 242 South Main St., Cheshire. Relatives and friends are asked to go directly to St. Thomas Becket Church, 435 North Brooksvale Rd., Cheshire, for a funeral mass on Thursday February 5, 2009 at 10: 00 AM.
