Josephine F. Schouten, age 80, of Cheshire entered into rest on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at Elim Park Health Care Center. She was the devoted wife of the late William Marinus Schouten, Sr. for 20 years. Josephine was born in Brooklyn, NY on July 15, 1939.
Josephine met her husband Bill in New York City while she was working for a Baptist health care facility as a cook. Bill quickly transformed himself into the man Josephine had envisioned and they soon fell in love, eventually relocating to the Hartford area to start their family. After Bill’s passing in 1982, Josephine relocated to Meriden before coming to Elim Park 10 years ago, where she became part of a wonderful community and made many strong friendships, especially with the late Virginia Dischinger, who was as close to her as a mother.
She is the beloved mother of William Marinus “Bill” Schouten, Jr. and his wife, Amy Kathryn Schouten of Stockton Springs, ME; and loving grandmother of Colin Dillard of Richmond, VA. She is the sister of Albert Friedly, Selma Johnson and Isabella Friedly; and is survived by several nieces and nephews. Josephine was predeceased by her infant son, William Albert Schouten.
Services will be held at Nelson Hall at Elim Park and will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Elim Park Resident Benevolent Fund, 140 Cook Hill Road, Cheshire, CT 06410. The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Cheshire has been entrusted with her care. To leave online condolences for her family, please visit www.fordfh.com
