Southbury - John Cargil Perham, 91, of Southbury passed away on Monday, December 21, 2009 at the River Glen Health Care Center in Southbury. He was the widower of Mary Hull Perham of Stamford.
Mr. Perham was born in Concord, New Hampshire on October 14, 1918; he was the son of Dr. Harry Perham and Mary Norcross. Dr. Perham died just six days after John's birth in the Great Flu Epidemic of 1918. In 1920, his mother, his Aunt Gertrude, and a close friend, Ann Clark, all moved to Waterbury where John was raised by the three women. John graduated from Crosby High School, class of 1936 and went on to Harvard University where he received his Bachelor's Degree in 1940 and a Master's Degree in History in 1941. He married Mary Hull in 1942 who predeceased him in 1985. John's newspaper career included nine years with the Hartford Courant where he was an editorial writer, followed by fourteen years at Barron's Weekly in New York. He concluded his career as an editor of Dun's Review, retiring to Heritage Village in Southbury in 1986, where he continued his lively interest in chess and volunteering his services to several schools.
John is survived by his nephew, Jeff Boland of Cheshire and his niece, Judy Boland of Belleaire Beach, Florida.
Arrangements ' Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be with his wife Mary in New Hampshire. There are no calling hours. The Alderson Funeral Home of Cheshire 615 S. Main St. is in charge of arrangements. Memorial Contributions may be made to an organization of the donor's choice.
