CHESHIRE – John Edward Guetens Jr(Jack), 95, passed away Monday, May 6, 2024, at Regency House Health & Rehabilitation Center in Wallingford. He was the husband of the late Evelyn (Mawhinney) Guetens.

Mr. Guetens was born September 20, 1928, in West Haven, son of the late John Edward Sr. and Constance (Liotard) Guetens. He was a retired purchasing manager for O.F. Mossberg & Sons Company.

Mr. Guetens leaves behind his two sons, Vernon Guetens, and his wife, Cheryl, of Cheshire, and John Guetens III, and his wife, Tina, of Uncasville. He will also be missed by his grandchildren; Vaughn, Cameryn, Tyler, and Bryan Guetens. In addition to his parents, Mr. Guetens was predeceased by his wife of 38 years Evelyn Guetens, his sister, Sandra Dudley, and grandson Christopher.

John graduated from West Haven High School in 1946, where he played hockey and baseball. He was a 1951 graduate of Middlebury College where he majored in Economics and was a four-year member of the ice hockey team and part of the inaugural season for the lacrosse team.

John proudly served in the Marine Corps from 1951 – 1954, attaining the rank of 2nd LT.

Following his service, through a chance meeting in a New York City cab, John met the love of his life Evelyn. The two were married in 1960 and together built a beautiful life together, settling in Cheshire, CT where they shared countless memories until Evelyn’s passing in 1998.

He was an avid fan of hockey, having coached many years at the youth, high school (for both Cheshire and Milford), and college levels. John’s hobbies and interests included sports car racing, tennis and competing in model airplane competitions throughout New England.

John was also a lover of animals as he was parent, and grandparent, to many cats and dogs throughout his life.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Regency House for the love, support and care they showed John over the last 5 years. It is greatly appreciated.

Arrangements: – Visitation for Mr. Guetens will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M., followed by a short service, at the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 South Main Street. A private burial will be held at Beaverdale Memorial Park in New Haven.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions, in his name, can be made to the CT Humane Society or the Alzheimer's Association of Connecticut.
