CHESHIRE- Janet Therese (Cochrane) Barrows, 87 of Cheshire, entered into eternal rest on April 8, 2015 at Mid-State Medical Center. She was the devoted wife of the late Edwin Shorrock Barrows.
Jane was born on Oct 8, 1927 in Somerville, MA, daughter of the late Paul V. and Mary Ruth (Hale) Cochrane. Jane once said of her childhood home: “I remember as a child being asked where I live and I said, I live at 37 Rangley Road, the house with all the lights on.”
Jane graduated from Hillhouse High School in New Haven (1945), UCONN (1949) with a Bachelor of Arts degree and received a Master’s degree from New Haven State Teachers College. During high school, she worked in the stacks at the New Haven Library and did volunteer work at St. Raphael's Hospital. She worked for the CT Agricultural Experiment Station and the biophysics department at Yale. Jane taught elementary school in West Haven and was an investigator for the State of Connecticut. She was a longtime Cheshire resident and a parishioner at St. Bridget Church. She also served as a past president of the Meriden AAUW of CT, and a member of the Sleeping Giant Park Association. Some of her favorite pastimes were tending the flowers in her garden, reading, and spending time with her family and friends. She had a great love for all animals.
She was the beloved mother of Mark Barrows of Hamden and Joyce Barrows Marston of Meriden; and the loving grandmother of Jocelyn and Benjamin Marston of Meriden. Jane is also survived by her sisters Patricia Lawes and Romily Cofrancesco and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Sheila Cochrane and Carol Santamauro and brother Paul Cochrane.
The Barrows family wishes to extend a special thank you to Barbara Fairclough and her family for their many years of compassionate care of Jane.
Arrangements- Mrs. Barrows' funeral will be held 12 PM Saturday April 18, 2015 at St. Bridget Church, 175 Main Street, Cheshire, CT 06410. Family and friends are asked to meet directly at church. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Centerville Cemetery in Hamden, and there are no calling hours.
