Mr. James R. Smith, 90, of Waterbury passed away Monday September 21, 2009 at Meridian Manor.

Mr. Smith was born November 20, 1918 in Waterbury a son of the late James and Leola (Rametti) Smith and was a lifelong Waterbury resident. He served in the Army during WWII in the Ordinance Division, stationed in the Philippines, Okinawa and in Japan as part of the Occupation Forces. He was employed at Joe's Tire Shop in Waterbury retiring after 50 years of service. He was a longtime member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge # 265 of Waterbury. Mr. Smith was also a member of Saint John Episcopal Church.

He is survived by his nephews, Wade Gordon Cooper of Cape May, NJ and Brent Coleman Richards of Riverton, UT. He was predeceased by his longtime companion Mary Quinlan.

Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be held Saturday September 26 at 11 a.m. at Saint John's Episcopal Church 16 Church Street in Waterbury. Burial will be private. Calling hours will be held Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the service in the library of Saint John's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Saint John's Episcopal Church Music Fund 16 Church Street Waterbury, CT. 06702. The Mulville Funeral Home 270 West Main Street has care of arrangements.
