WATERBURY- Ida Epstein, 92, passed away Monday January 13, 2014 at Waterbury Hospital. She was the widow of Julian Abraham Epstein.
She was born July 1, 1921 in Waterbury daughter of the late Irving and Yetta (Lieber) Bisnov.
Ida was a very active volunteer. She was involved with Hadassah, working in the Hadassah Thrift Shop as well as being active in the local chapter and receiving the Hand of Healing Award for her efforts. She belonged to the Jewish War Veterans Auxiliary as well as the Ladies Hebrew Aid Society. She would travel to the VA Hospital in Newington to play Bingo with Veterans. She served a term as Temple Israel's Sisterhood President, and on the Board of Directors as well as a volunteer in the Synagogue office. Ida was active in Green Community which eventually merged with the Council of Churches to form GWIM, Greater Waterbury Interfaith Ministries. She was made a lifetime Board Member. She was active with the Postal Auxiliary and was the local chapters President for years. Ida also served as local President of NARFE, National Association of Retired Federal Employees Waterbury Chapter for ten years.
She is survived by a daughter Sharon and her husband Dr. Ira Goldman of Waterbury; a son Harold B. Epstein of Wolcott; three grandchildren, Joshua and his wife Alison Broder of Higganum, Ezra and his wife Dr. Lauren Broder of Oakland, CA, and Julie and her husband John Smith of Wolcott; three great grandchildren Victoria Smith, John Smith Jr., and Cooper Julian Broder; and two step grandchildren Derek Goldman of Missoula, MT, and Deni Goldman of Randolph, MA. Ida was predeceased by her three brothers, Raymond, Alfred, and Milton Bisnov.
Arrangements- A funeral service will be held 11 A.M Wednesday January 15, 2014 at B'Nai Israel, 444 Main St N, Southbury, CT 06488. Burial will follow in Farband Cemetery, Morris, CT. Shiva will be observed 7 P.M, Wednesday January 15, 2014, and Thursday January 16, 2014 at B'Nai Israel, 444 Main St N, Southbury, CT 06488. The Alderson Funeral Home of Waterbury, 9 Holmes Ave, 06710 is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers donations in Ida's name may be made to B'Nai Israel, 444 Main St N, Southbury, CT 06488, or to GWIM "Greater Waterbury Interfaith Ministries" 16 Church St, Waterbury, 06702.
