THOMASTON - Grayce Cookson Pierpont, 96, originally from the Waterville section of Waterbury and a longtime resident of Thomaston, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2012.
Grayce was born September 23, 1915 in Waterbury, the daughter of the late Edward Martin and Martha (Emmons) Cookson. She was a 1933 graduate of Crosby High School and a 1937 cum laude graduate of Middlebury College, where she was a member of the EK National Society. From 1936 to 1940she worked as a social worker for the Lincoln House in Waterbury.
After moving to Thomaston in 1946, she became a member of the Thomaston Covenant Churc h and later served as the President of the 4th and 5th District of Covenant Church Women and as Treasurer for the East Coast Conference Board. For 20 years, she sat on the Board of the Thomaston Public Library serving for 18 of those years as its Treasurer. She was also Canteen chairperson for the Thomaston Bloodmobile Drives and a volunteer for the Ecumenical pantry. In 1989 she was named Citizen of the Year by the Thomaston Rotary Club.
Passionate in life, Grayce loved to travel, read, knit, spend time with her grandchildren and follow sports. She was an avid fan of Arnold Palmer and especially the Boston red Sox.
Grayce is survived by her daughter June Pierpont Webster of Cheshire; her son Frederick E. Pierpont Jr. of Wilmington, NC; her four grandchildren Emily, Bennett and Andrew Webster and Amy Pierpont; as well as her sister Jane Cookson of San Bernardino, CA.
Arrangements -Funeral services will be held on Saturday September 22, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Covenant Church of Thomaston, 64 Grove St., Thomaston. After a brief luncheon, a graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. the Goshen Center Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Covenant Church of Thomaston, 64 Grove St., Thomaston, CT 06787. The Alderson Funeral Home of Cheshire is assisting with arrangements.
