Naugatuck, CT Filomena Elizabeth (Modesto) Ginther, 101, the widow of Edward Ginther, died peacefully on June 19, 2024 at Waterbury Hospital.
Filomena was born May 7, 1923 in Stamford, CT a daughter of the late Salvatore and Michelina Modesto. She was raised in Stamford, Connecticut and later lived in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, until retiring to Port Charlotte, Florida and then returning to Connecticut to be closer to her family.
She was the former owner and chef at the Forty and Eight Club in Pottsville, PA and was an instructor for pastry and baking classes at Penn State University.
Filomena loved hand embroidery and quilting and made the most beautiful one of a kind comforters. She was an incredible cook and loved sharing recipes and techniques with her family. She was also an avid and serious BINGO player at the local senior center and she enjoyed playing cards with friends.
Filomena is survived by her brother and sister in law, Frank and Marie Modesto; her sister, Michelina Wapinski; her son, Salvatore Iorio of Stamford, CT; her son and daughter in law, Jack and Sonja Manforte of Naugatuck, CT; her son and daughter in law, John and Patricia Manforte of Watertown, CT; her beloved grandchildren, Jerry, Barry, Michael, Jr., Salvatore, Jr., Mark, Mike, Jack, Jr., Amanda, Lisa, Michelle, April, Kristen, Lauren and Kristin; her great grandchildren that live locally, Ivy, Jack, Christopher, Hannah, Ralphie, Kayla, Addison, Johnny, Max, Lila, Paulie, Jordan, Camden, Nicolina, Carlina, Asher, Faith, Brianna, Joseph and Ella; her great-great grandchildren that live locally, Michael, Alex, Skyler and Owen along with many more wonderful great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren that live in California, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and her parents, Filomena was predeceased by her son, Michael Iorio; her daughter, Barbara (Iorio) Gill; her grandchildren, Cheryl Iorio and Shane Gill; her brothers, Jack, John and Salvatore and her sisters, Angelina and Mary.
Services for close friends and family will be held on Friday, June 28, 2024 at Elmwood Cemetery, Bethel, CT. There are no calling hours and arrangements have been entrusted to the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Avenue, Naugatuck, CT. In lieu of flowers and to honor Filomena’s memory, donations are requested for breast cancer research at www.donate.cancer.org.
