Naugatuck, CT Robert W. Evon, Sr. died peacefully surrounded by his family on March 17, 2016. Robert was born October 11, 1922 in Waterbury, CT a son of the late Arthur F. Evon and Ella McDougall Evon and had lived his life in Naugatuck, CT with his wife Helen of 65 plus years, until her passing in 2012. He is predeceased by siblings Ruth Evon, Gladys Kuchauskas, Jeanette Hyde, Leon Evon and Earl T. Evon, Sr.
Robert attended St. Francis School and Naugatuck High School. He worked in the 183 Company CCC Camp in Eastford, CT and is a decorated veteran who served in the U.S. Army in France during World War II. He trained in the 64th Medical Regiment in Camp Young in Indio California and in Camp Bowie Texas. Robert retired from the footwear division of Uniroyal, Inc. after 43 years of service where he worked in both wage and management positions. He was a member of the Naugatuck Lodge B.P.O.E. #967.
He is survived by his son, Robert W. Evon, Jr. and his wife Suzanne and his daughter, Linda Harris and her husband Ray. He leaves behind his six treasured grandchildren, Robert W. Evon, III and his wife Leslie, Jessica Evon, Tamara Harris, Tonya St. Marie and her husband Kurt, Trisha Harris and Ray V. Harris IV and his wife Stephanie. He loved each of his six great grandchildren; Hannah, Jonah, Kendra, Keller, Camilla and Zachary with all of his heart. His many nieces and nephews were an extension of his own family and he loved them all.
Robert and his late wife Helen enjoyed life to the fullest. They were active with duckpin bowling, all forms of dancing and travel. He was also an avid golfer, spending as much time as possible on the golf course.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at 11:30am at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church Street. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. James Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00pm at the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Avenue. Members of the Naugatuck Veterans Council will assemble at the funeral home Tuesday at 6:30pm and the Naugatuck Elks Ritual will be Tuesday at 6:45pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, to honor Robert’s memory contributions can be made to St. Francis St. Hedwig’s School, 294 Church Street, Naugatuck, CT 06770.
