CHESHIRE- Ethel (Blum) Kaplan, age 89, peacefully passed away on Sunday, August 27th, at her home in Elim Park in Cheshire, CT. She was predeceased in June by her loving husband of 69 years, Sam. She is survived by her three sons, Jay Kaplan, M.D. and his wife Kathleen, Robert Kaplan and his wife Fran, and Bryan Kaplan.
She leaves behind eight grandchildren: Shawna (Kaplan) Hausman and her husband Tate; Eric Kaplan and his wife Meredith; Rachael Kaplan and her husband Michal; Tova Kaplan and her husband Matt; Evan Kaplan, Ashley Kaplan, Jake Kaplan and Kyle Kaplan. Her five beloved great-grandchildren are Lincoln and Evelyn Hausman, Nicole and Bryce Kaplan, and Seymour (Sammy) Harrington.
Ethel was born in Brooklyn, NY, to Abraham and Theresa (Solomon) Blum. Ethel met her future husband Sam at a local dance and married him soon after. With her encouragement, he opened a plumbing business in Manhattan that is still thriving to this day.
Ethel and Sam moved to Long Island in 1961. They bought a vacation home in Pennsylvania, which became the setting for many parties and family events over the years. Ethel showed a true flair for entertaining throughout her life. She was also known for her incredible sense of style and taste. She made beautiful hand-knit sweaters and crocheted blankets, which are treasured by her family.
Ethel and Sam were avid golfers who enjoyed playing at their homes in Pennsylvania and Boca Raton, Florida. They loved traveling the world and visiting far-flung places, including Israel, South America, Europe and Asia. In their later years, they enjoyed Caribbean cruises with their entire family, creating many wonderful memories.
For the last two years, Ethel and Sam enjoyed living at Elim Park in Cheshire, CT, where they were surrounded by their family.
Arrangements- A private burial was held at the Mt. Ararat cemetery in Lindenhurst, NY with a graveside service. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice. The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 South Main St, 06410 assisted the family with the arrangements.
