Douglas Engle

NAUGATUCK – Douglas Henry Engle, 62, of Naugatuck, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2016 at Grove Manor in Waterbury.

Doug was born on October 1, 1954 at St. Mary’s Hospital, the son of Barbara (Thurston) Engle of Naugatuck and the late Henry Engle. He was the best friend and former husband of Shawn Flanigan.

Doug graduated from Naugatuck High School, Class of 1973 and attended Simmons School of Mortuary Science in Syracuse, N.Y.

He worked for many years with Henry Engle Plumbing and Heating as well as at various golf courses and for The Meyers Supply Co. Doug was a CIAC referee for baseball, softball and basketball and was also the owner of Community Liquors in Naugatuck.

An avid sports fan, Doug loved UCONN Basketball, N.Y. Giants football, and most of all the N.Y. Yankees, where he had season weekend tickets for years. He played softball for most of his adult life and enjoyed golf, fishing and hunting.

In addition to his mother, Barbara, and former wife, Shawn, he leaves behind his brother, David Engle; his sister, Lynn E. Raczkowski and her husband, Brian, of Branford; nephews, Matthew and Eric Engle of FL, Matthew Almeida of CO; nieces, Erin Engle of FL and Laura Almeida of CT; three great-nephews and -nieces, Jackson, Logan and Carter and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, November 7, 2016 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church Street, Naugatuck, CT. Burial will be private. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 on Sunday, November 6, at Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Avenue, Naugatuck, CT.
