Eleanor Hope (Welton) Gager, born on August 28, 1925, was a lifelong resident of Cheshire. A graduate of New Haven Teachers College (now Southern Connecticut State University). Eleanor taught elementary school students in the Cheshire Public School system for many decades. A member of the First Congregational Church of Cheshire for more than half a century, Eleanor was active in the Ladies Aid and a delegate to the (then) Waterbury Area Council of Churches.
Eleanor (Ellie) believed in community engagement and practiced what she preached. She was involved with the Cheshire Historical Society, a checker at the voting polls, a community representative to the regional mental health board, member of the DAR and more. She believed in quietly giving selflessly to others so that they might find opportunity for a more sustainable life and then pay it forward to continue helping the next.
Ellie had a great sense of humor inquisitive mind about the world around her and kept it through the end. She loved playing cards, working on puzzles, traveling, family gathering and quiet conversations with those that passed through her life. She was an amazing woman and wonderful role model for so many.
Her family and friends meant everything to her. She always said treat your friends like family and you will never be alone. She led by example and was so very fortunate to have many friendships that spanned well over a century. Her very special remaining friends include; Florence Wheeler, Jane Richards and Anita Lindsey.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of 52 years, William W. Gager, Jr.. She leaves behind her two daughters, Dorothy E. Gager (Cheshire) and Sarah E. Gager (Washington, CT) and (former) step grandson, Kristepher A. Whelan (Bethel) whom she cherished so very much. In addition, she leaves her sister in law, Barbara H. Welton, and her family which includes two nephews, three nieces (and their families) and her many cousins of numerous generations near and far. She was so very blessed to have such incredible care from two special people in her life; Nana Mintah and Ellen Knudsen (bless you both).
