Dwight Francis Gordon, Jr., 83, of Wallingford (formerly Cheshire) passed away at Masonicare Health Center on November 30, 2019. He was the husband of Janet Reynolds Gordon for 62 years.
He was born in Lewiston, Maine on December 30, 1935. He was the son of the late Dwight F. Gordon and Marion Gordon. The family moved to CT during WWII where his father worked for Pratt & Whitney.
Mr. Gordon attended UCONN for two years before he volunteered draft and joined the army where he served in Korea for sixteen months (after the war). When he returned he married Janet and returned to UCONN for his BS & MS degrees. He then attended NC State in Raleigh, NC where he earned his PhD in Microbiology. His first job was at Forsyth Dental Center, Boston, MA doing research. Staff members had the opportunity to lecture at MIT and Harvard where Dwight decided he loved teaching better. In 1968 he moved the family to Cheshire and became a professor of microbiology at then Quinnipiac College/(University) in Hamden, CT where he retired in 2008.
Having summers off enabled him to plant and harvest a huge vegetable garden in the back yard. He also loved traveling to Maine and Cape Cod and after retirement trips to Canyon Country, and visits to family and friends in Oregon & Washington and once to England.
He is survived by his daughters Laurie Mozian (Chris), Monica Fournier (Lenny) and son Steven (Tera) and grandchildren, Kristen, Nathan, Rachel & Jacob and his brother Sherwood (Lynn).
A memorial service for Mr. Gordon will be held 11 A.M, Monday, December 9, 2019 at The First Congregational of Cheshire, 111 Church Dr, 06410. Family and friends are asked to meet directly at church. A private graveside service will take place in Center Cemetery at a later date. The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 South Main St, 06410 is assisting the family with the arrangements.
