Dr. Gerald “Jerry” Labriola, 92, passed away Sunday, April 28th, 2024. He was the beloved husband of the late Lois (Follett) Labriola. Dr. Labriola was born on December 12, 1931, in Waterbury, the son of the late Pasquale and Rose (Famularo) Labriola. A lifelong Naugatuck resident, he graduated from Naugatuck High School, Class of 1949, Yale University, Class of 1953, and Thomas Jefferson Medical College, Class of 1957. He proudly served his country as a Navy Doctor, stationed at Quonset Point, Rhode Island.
Dr. Labriola was a pediatrician who practiced in Naugatuck for thirty-five years, retiring in 1996. He was Chief of Staff at Waterbury Hospital in the late 1970s. In 1972 he was elected to the Naugatuck Board of Education, serving until 1980, when he was elected State Senator for the 15th District in the Connecticut General Assembly. He was a candidate for Lt. Governor in 1982, Governor in 1986, and U.S. Senate in 1994.
Jerry and Lois were active members of St. Michael’s Church. He was a long-time member of Rotary in Naugatuck, and he served on the Board of Directors at Naugatuck Valley Savings & Loan. He was an original founder of Glendale Care Center in Naugatuck. He played on the Yale basketball team, was their leading scorer for four years, and was also an avid golfer. Jerry and Lois loved cheering on the UConn men’s and women’s basketball teams, and the New York Yankees.
Upon retirement from pediatrics, Dr. Labriola became an author – writing mystery thrillers as well as several non-fiction books with Dr. Henry Lee, in which they analyzed famous crimes. Jerry & Lois traveled on cruise ships all over the world, where he lectured about his writing craft, his novels and famous crimes. He loved spending time with each and every member of his family.
Dr. Labriola is survived by his son Jerry Labriola, Jr. and his wife Barbara, his son David Labriola and his wife Joanna, his daughter Sue Labriola, his grandchildren Kristen (Mark), Jane (Ian), Sarah (Kevin), Lindsey, Nick (Andrea), Alex and Kate, as well as his ten great-grandchildren.
Arrangements – Funeral services and burial will be private and there are no calling hours. The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Naugatuck is assisting with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 210 Church Street, Naugatuck, CT 06770.
