Cheshire - Dr. George MacDonald “Don” Birtwistle, 83, passed away on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, at Midstate Medical Center.
Don was born in England, the son of the late James and Hannah Birtwistle. He was an alumnus of Kings College, London University and Magdalen College, Oxford University, where he earned his Doctorate of Philosophy in Chemistry. He moved to the United States in the early 1960s to pursue post-doctoral research at Harvard University. After leaving academia, Don established a successful career in the flavor and fragrance industry, eventually becoming President of McCormick and Wild.
His main passion was playing squash, and Don participated in several amateur competitions up into his 60s. His family also remembers him for his unique sense of humor, love of music, playful nature, and unconditional love.
Dr. Birtwistle is survived by his loving family including his wife of 40 years, four children, 10 grandchildren, twin brother, and extended family. He is preceded in death by his parents and beloved stepfather, Wilfred Cooper.
Arrangements – Funeral services for Dr. Birtwistle will be Saturday, June 11th at the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 South Main Street. Visitation will be from 1-2pm, followed by a memorial service at 2pm. Afterwards will be a private (family only) burial of the ashes. We are asking that anyone who attends wear a mask.
