SOUTHBURY- Dr. Carolyn (Rubin) Falk, PhD., of Southbury, passed away Sunday evening June 21, 2015 at the Yale-New Haven Hospital. She was the wife of Dr. Maurice Falk, M.D.
Dr. Falk was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Feb. 4, 1938, a daughter of the late Jacob and Elizabeth (Elkin) Rubin and was educated in the local school system. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Brooklyn College in 1959, and her Master of Science degree in Special Education-Learning Disabilities from Southern Ct. State University in 1959, her Sixth year- Professional Diploma in Administration and Supervision from Southern in 1981, Doctorate in Educational Psychology in Special Education from the University of Conn.in 1986, and another Sixth year Professional Diploma in School Psychology also from Southern in 1992.
Her professional career began in 1971 with the Naugatuck School System, where she taught in the Emotionally Disturbed and the Gifted program until 1973, from 1980 through 1983 she taught in the Redding School System in the Gifted program. From 1983 through 1987 she taught in the Talcott Mountain Science Center, serving as a Teacher and Consultant in the Social Studies and Creativity program, and from 1087 through 1988 she served at Southern Conn. State University as, Supervisor of the Curriculum Laboratory, and from1987 through 1997 she served as Adjunct Faculty at the University of Conn. teaching Educational Psychology. From 1990 to the present she served as a Counselor in Individual and Group training with Optimal Performance Training. In 1992 she accepted a position as a School Psychologist with the Wolcott School System, serving until 2003. In 1983, Dr. Falk founded the Falk Foundation for Excellence, a foundation for Creativity Grants, still serving as its President.
Dr. Falk was a well-known columnist in her field, having been a Featured Columnist with “Consumer Connection” from 1987 through 1993 and “Team: The Early Adolescence Magazine” from 1986 through 1991. She had served as a United States Figure Skating Judge, a Justice of the Peace, as Webmaster for Beth El Synagogue, and a past member of the Region # 15 Board of Education. She was a potter, and a fused glass artist. Her professional affiliations included memberships in the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), the Conn. Assoc. of School Psychologists (CASP), the American Psychological Assoc. (APA) and the United States Figure Skating Assoc. (U,S.F.S.A.)
Besides her husband of over 56 years she is survived by her son Steven Falk and his wife Claire Landers of Baltimore, MD; her daughter Jodie P. Falk and her husband Gary Newcomb of Greenfield, MA; her sister Rona Zucker of West Palm Beach, FL; her grandchildren Felice Falk, Matan J. Newcomb, Dhar E. and Rosa L. Newshore.
Funeral services will be held (TODAY) Tuesday June 23, 2015 at Temple B’ai Israel, 444 Main St. North, Southbury at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Beth El Cemetery, Boyden St., Waterbury. A period of Shiva will be observed at the Falk residence, 458 Heritage Rd. Unit 303, Southbury on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings with a Shiva Minyan at 7 p.m. The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Waterbury, 9 Holmes Ave. is assisting with the arrangements. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Temple B’Nai Israel, 444 Main St. North, Southbury, in her memory.
