Dorothea Blumenstein Kochman July 5, 1926 – March 29, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Dorothea Blumenstein Kochman. Born on July 5, 1926, in Berlin, Germany, Dorothea’s life was defined by resilience, love, and an unshakable spirit.
In 1939, as a young girl, she was forced to flee Nazi Germany with her family, finding refuge in Shanghai. It was there that she met the love of her life, Harry Kochman. Together, they built a life rooted in love, family, and strength, eventually settling in the United States in 1949 and making their home on Long Island.
Dorothea and Harry raised two children, Ronald and Yvonne. She now joins her dear husband Harry and beloved daughter Yvonne, whom she cherished beyond measure.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and strength in her son Ron and his wife Kathleen, whose devoted care brought her comfort in her later years. She will be deeply missed by her grandchildren, Vicki Oatis (Ben), Kim Laczak (John), and Scott Kochman (Sara), as well as her adored great-grandchildren—Connor, Addison, John, Addie, Emma, Summer, and Josie—who knew her as their cherished “Super Oma.”
Dorothea will be remembered for her no-nonsense wisdom, her unwavering devotion to family, and the deep love she shared with those fortunate enough to know her. Her presence will be missed, but her strength and spirit will live on in all of us.
A private service will be held to honor her life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Connecticut Hospice in her memory. The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Cheshire has been entrusted with her care.
