Donald VanWie, 83, of E. Mitchell Ave., Cheshire, passed away Thursday morning November 20, 2008 at the Masonic Home in Wallingford. He was the husband of Phyllis J. (Reed) VanWie.
Mr. VanWie was born and raised in Randolph, NY the son of the late Raymond and Lena (Gray) VanWie. He was a Cheshire resident since 1975 having previously resided in Eden, NY.
Mr. VanWie was a WWII Army Veteran, attended Syracuse University and graduated from Buffalo University. He was a devote member for over 50 years of the Masonic Temple Lodge #16 AF and AM in Cheshire and a member of the Cheshire United Methodist Church. He was an avid sportsman and was very involved in his children lives volunteering for many organizations as a coach or committee member.
Besides his wife of 55 years, Mr. VanWie is survived by his three sons Daniel of Pasadena, CA, Douglas and his wife Sharon of Cheshire, and Donald Jr. and his wife Jessica of South Windsor; his two daughters Dawn Deganis and her husband Sergio of Cheshire, and Debra Govostes of N. Redding, MA; two sisters Ramona Weissbard of Albany, NY and Rita Finger of Niagra Falls, NY; 11 grandchildren Marisa, Ryan, Justin, Julie, Mark, John, Alexandra, Meghan, Marina, Nicky and Jake; two nephews David and Craig and two nieces Judy and Lynn.
Arrangements ' Funeral services will be held on Saturday November 22, 2008 9:15 from the Slater Funeral Home, 242 S. Main St. Cheshire, to Cheshire United Methodist Church for services at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Cheshire Hillside Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
