Charles Delaney

Charles W. Delaney Jr.

-Middlebury Native, Army Veteran

Charles William Delaney, Jr., age 82, entered into rest on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at his residence. Charlie was born on August 27, 1931 in Middlebury, son of the late Charles William and Mary Scholan Delaney, and the former husband of the late Helen B. Delaney.

Charlie or 'Red' attended local schools and for most of his life he was well known in his hometown. He enlisted in the Army after high school attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant while serving in Korea. He became a member of the Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department at the age of 16 and served the department in many capacities. He ran a popular restaurant in town called Delaney's Coffee Shop in the 60's and 70's, until the restaurant was reopened by his son and daughter in law under the name Delaney's Again. Charlie served on the Middlebury Republican Town Committee for many years and enjoyed nothing more than a spirited campaign. He was also a Police Commissioner during the tenure of several different police chiefs and took great pride in his role. In addition, Charlie developed a reputation as being a prankster, joke-teller, and Master of Ceremonies extraordinaire. His work as a Deputy Warden for the Department of Corrections and subsequently as a security director for the Uniroyal Company took him to many places, but he often said that when he came through the rock cut on Rt. 64 into Middlebury, he knew was home.

He is survived by his Son, Charles W. "Chuck" Delaney, III and his wife Beth of Naugatuck, and his Daughter, Ellen D. Aronheim of Middlebury. He also leaves 6 Grandchildren: Peter, Emily, Rob, Chip, Kate and Lindsay as well as 10 Great-Grandchildren. He was predeceased by his Son-in-Law Russell E. Aronheim.

All services for Charlie are private and at the convenience of his family. The Alderson Funeral Home of Waterbury has been entrusted with his arrangements; donations can be made in his memory to the Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department or to the Middlebury Congregational Church, Book of Remembrance.
