Waterbury – Carole (Smith) Handler, 88 passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 22, 2023 at The Village of East Farms. She was the widow of the late Richard W. Handler.
Mrs. Handler was born July 12, 1935, in Lynn MA., daughter of the late Max and Augusta (Jagher) Smith. Carole was raised in Gloucester, and graduated from Lasell Jr. College before moving to Waterbury. She attended St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing, eventually working as a laboratory technician, before marring and raising her two sons.
Carole was active in The Civic Theatre of Waterbury, a past president of the Holy Cross High School Mothers’ Club, and always an eager volunteer for many local causes. She enjoyed attending local theater productions and cheering on the UCONN women’s basketball teams. Carole loved to travel, tend to her gardens, and spend time with family and friends.
Left to cherish Carole’s memory are her sons, Michael (Janet) of Middletown, and Chuck of Oakville, her granddaughter, Laura, her great grandson, Ariel, of Arlington, MA, and several cousins.
The family would like to thank the caring and compassionate staff of The Village of East Farms, as well as Tammy from VITAS Hospice.
Graveside services at Star Benevolent Lodge Cemetery are private an at the convenience of her family. The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Waterbury is assisting with her arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
