Mrs. Carol Dempsey, 88, of Cheshire, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Saturday, March 22, 2025. Carol was born on February 24, 1937 in Brooklyn, New York. She was a resident of Cheshire for 59 years, where she raised her four children and was active in her community.
Mrs. Dempsey is survived by three of her four children, Michael Dempsey (Rita) of Wolcott, Cathleen Dempsey of Cheshire, and Daniel Dempsey (Lisa) of Cheshire. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Michael Dempsey, Alison Dempsey, Colin Dempsey, Jake Dempsey, Sean Dempsey. She will also be missed by her sister MaryAnn Buckley (Robert), sister-in-law Carmen McNamara, and countless nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is predeceased by her husband and Cheshire police officer, James Dempsey, and her son, James Dempsey, Jr.
Family was always Carol’s greatest priority. She took great joy in raising her four children, acting as a girl scout leader, den mother, and biggest sideline fan. She enthusiastically hosted at least fifty Thanksgiving sit down dinners for her large, extended family; an event she and they looked forward to each year. More recently, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, babysitting whenever she could and attending countless sporting events.
Carol worked more than one job to support her family as a single mother. She worked for 30 years as an Accounts Receivable Manager at Country Lumber in Cheshire, retiring in 2018 at the age of 81. Carol also became a Justice of the Peace in the early 90’s, marrying over 150 couples while serving in this role. In addition to her other job, Carol worked as a hostess at the Waverly Inn and Yankee Silversmith Inn for many years. She became politically active in her community through the Cheshire Democratic Town Committee in the 1980’s, and was treasurer for the Cheshire Democratic Women’s club for many years. She was honored with the CDWC Civic Pride Award in 2017. To her friends’ amusement, Carol greatly enjoyed her book club, even though over the course of forty years, she only read five of the books.
She enjoyed traveling to see family, shopping, and TV. She was a big fan of the ID channel and all the Law & Order type shows, Dateline, etc.
A loyal friend to all and most of her closest friendships go back 50-60 years. She is already missed by so many.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Friday, March 28th from 4 to 7 pm at the Alderson-Ford Funeral home, 615 South Main Street, Cheshire, CT.
