Carmine “Tom” Romano, age 98, entered into rest on Monday, December 20, 2021 at Hamden Rehabilitation Care Center. He was the devoted husband of Eleanor (Renda) Romano for over 73 years. He was born on January 26, 1923 in New Haven, son of the late Catello and Adelaide (Ianniello) Romano.
Tom served his country with honor and pride as a Gunners Mate with the US Navy during WWII. After the war, he met the love of his life, Eleanor and they were married on August 7, 1948. Tom continued to serve his community with the New Haven Police Department from 1950 until his retirement in 1970. Following his retirement, he worked for Union Trust Bank and the State of CT Department of Transportation. Tom’s love of horses led him to become a member of the CT Governor’s Horse Guard. A talented musician, Tom played the mandolin for several local nursing homes and restaurants. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid billiard player at the Cheshire and Prospect Senior Centers. He was a voracious reader and a great historian who would share his knowledge with everyone. He was a generous person, whose generosity was not only confined to family and friends but to perfect strangers.
He is the beloved father of Marilyn Modzelewski and her husband, Eugene of North Branford, CT and Carolyn Buffinton and her husband, George of Prospect, CT. Tom also leaves his loving grandchildren, Rebecca (Brian) Roy, Jennifer (Kevin) Yokley, Christopher (Yomaira)Modzelewski, Sarah Modzelewski and Gregory (Enkela) Modzelewski; and his cherished great-grandchildren, Griffin and Eleanor Roy, Madelyn and Samantha Yokley, Carmine and Isabella Modzelewski, and Mia and Lucas Modzelewski; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Damian Romano; and his siblings, Thomas Romano, Annette Tommaselli, Joseph Romano, Edward Romano and Anne Lye.
Friends may greet his family at the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 So. Main Street, Cheshire, CT 06410 on Sunday, December 26, 2021 from 3PM until 5PM. On Monday, December 27, 2021 his funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:15AM for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10AM in St. Bridget of Sweden Parish/St. Thomas Becket Church, 435 N. Brooksvale Road, Cheshire. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow in St. Bridget Cemetery, Higgins Road, Cheshire. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Damian T.
