Michael Best

Naugatuck, CT Michael Best, 61, died peacefully on November 14, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.

Michael was born March 20, 1963 in Waterbury, CT, the oldest son of the late James and Arline (Hennessey) Best. Michael was raised in Naugatuck, graduated from Naugatuck High School, Class of 1981, and for 12 years he worked as a signal operator for Metro-North Railroad.

Michael was a US Navy Veteran and Navy Sea Bee. He used his Sea Bee training when he worked as a construction mechanic for several local companies prior to joining MetroNorth. He was a proud member of the Polish American Club and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 640.

He was a lifelong fan of the New York Jets and the New York Mets, often attending games with his dad and brothers. But his favorite ballgames were whatever team his daughter Riley was playing on. He loved driving her and her friends to team practices and games, cheering them on from Little League and Rec Leagues to Naugatuck High Varsity softball and volleyball teams. He loved watching them grow and develop their skills.

Michael is survived by his daughter, Riley Best; his sister, Jamie D’Amato; his brothers, Kyle Best (Kim), Brian Best (Diana), Chas Best(Becky) and Tom Best (Jen); his aunt, Randi Dibble; his uncle, Don Dibble; his aunt, Barbara Hennessey; many nieces, nephews and cousins; his former wife of 14 years, Dana Best; his stepdaughter, Alyssa Burksa and her daughter Camila Lynn and his stepson, Zachary Burksa.

He was pre-deceased by his brother-in-law Anthony D’Amato and sister-in-law Stephanie Best as well as many aunts and uncles.

A funeral service will be Thursday at 10:30am at the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Avenue, Naugatuck. Burial with military honors will follow at St. James Cemetery, Cross Street, Naugatuck. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00pm. Members of the Naugatuck Veterans Council will assemble at the funeral home Wednesday at 6:45pm.
