He was a 1970 graduate of Cheshire High School and a 2013 inductee into its hall of fame. A longtime Cheshire resident, Mr. Sutherland was the owner of Barry’s Automotive.
Barry’s interest in cars and all things mechanical began at an early age. He loved working on cars, racing cars, and restoring classics. He began his career at Genest Auto and then worked for the Special Vehicle Design Company. It was there he designed and built specialty muscle cars, including one for the original cannonball run and the Daytona 24-hour race. It was in 1982 he opened Barry’s Automotive alongside his wife Lisa. Besides working on cars, Barry enjoyed towing cars for the town of Cheshire where he got to spend time with the members of both the police and fire departments. He valued their service and friendship.
Barry was an avid softball and basketball player involved for many years in Cheshire’s recreation leagues. He was a fan of both NASCAR and the Boston Red Sox.
