WALLINGFORD - Dr. Anthony Vincent Piccirillo, 86, passed away Saturday April 4, 2015 at the Masonic Healthcare Center in Wallingford.
Anthony V. Piccirillo, “Tony”, was born on November 12, 1928 in New Haven, CT to Louis and Raffelina Piccirillo. He grew up in the Wooster Street area among his large extended Italian American family, including his one brother, Martin Piccirillo of North Haven.
Married to Jeanne Pieroway of Gloucester, MA in 1953, they resided in the Wallingford area for 59 years where they raised their family. They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary this year.
Tony graduated from East Haven High School, and then Yale University (1950) with a major in biology; attended Oxford University in London on fellowship to study ethics and philosophy. He received his Medical Degree from Yale School of Medicine (1954). He then completed his internship at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and his residency in pediatrics at Yale-New Haven Hospital, and St. Raphael’s Hospital. Twenty years later he received board certification in allergy, asthma and immunology. He also served two years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Jeanne and four beloved children: Dr. Mark Piccirillo and his wife, Dr. Susan Piccirillo of Newburgh, ME; Peter and his wife, Barbara of Woolrich, ME; twin daughters - Mary Pfister and her husband, Dr. David Pfister of Rye, NY; Emily and her husband, Gordon Clark of Silver Spring, MD; and six grandchildren – Evan, Lauren, Monica, Claire, Andrew and Alicia. He is also survived by his brother, Martin and his wife, Marta and their children Conrad, Louis, and Paula Piccirillo. He also has many cousins in the New Haven area.
Affectionately known by his patients, families and around town as ‘Dr. Pic’, he was recognized for his passion for providing excellent health care for children and his willingness to make house calls at any hour. His professional affiliations included the American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, and the CT State Medical Society. He served as Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Yale and St. Raphael’s and was in private group and solo pediatric practice in the Wallingford area for nearly 50 years.
Tony was deeply committed to his family and enjoyed a diverse community of friends. He had a special sense of humor, generous spirit, boundless curiosity, and enthusiasm for many and varied interests – classical music and opera; the history and makers of stringed instruments, especially violins; fine art, favoring Impressionism; American and rare coins; rocks and minerals; public speaking; and of course, Italian cooking he learned from his parents. He made an excellent pasta pescatore and had a weakness for lemon ice and biscotti.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 65 North Main Street, Wallingford on Thursday, April 9th at 10:30 a.m. A reception will be held following the service in the church hall. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family and there are no calling hours.
