Cheshire -Alice (Johnson) Buckland, 86, of Cheshire, passed away March 12, 2010 at Masonicare of Wallingford. She was the wife of the late Richard A. Buckland.
Mrs. Buckland was born in Cheshire on June 25, 1923, the daughter of the late Robert James and Alice May (Lincoln) Johnson and was a lifelong Cheshire resident. She was a graduate of Humiston Grammar School, Lyman Hall High School and Stone Business College. She was involved in the development of several real estate properties in Cheshire.
She worked for Asgrow Seed Co. where she was their first cost accountant. She retired after 30 years as an accountant for Cahn Engineers (later being Greiner Engineering Corp.). In 1971 she suggested that they make arrangements with the Second New Haven Bank to have direct payroll deposits, the first in Connecticut.
Mrs. Buckland was a past matron of Chapter #76 (Crescent Chapter #12) Order of the Eastern Star, a member of Institute Management Accounts, served as a director for United Methodist Homes Foundation, Inc. and a member of the Cheshire United Methodist Church where she served on various boards.
Mrs. Buckland is survived by her son Lester Lee Harris III and his wife Janet of Cheshire; her brother Willis Johnson of Cheshire; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by an infant daughter Joan Betsy Harris.
Arrangements - Funeral services will be held on Tuesday March 16, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the Alderson Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 S. Main St. Burial will follow in Cheshire Hillside Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, 205 Academy Road Cheshire, CT 06410 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
