Alfred E. “Fritz” Mayer, 86, of Cheshire, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 11, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of Helen (Laskes) Mayer for over 57 years. Born on July 26, 1938, in Brooklyn, New York, Alfred was the son of the late Jacob and Dora (Stoeckle) Mayer. He grew up in Queens, where he attended local schools, and after a brief time at Wagner College on Staten Island, he returned home to support his mother following the passing of his father.
Alfred joined the local DeMolay Youth Mason Chapter and loved to ski with his friends as a young man. It was on the slopes of Carinthia Mountain in Vermont that he met Helen, the love of his life, and they were married on October 14, 1967. They started their family and moved to Cheshire in 1974.
For 33 years, Alfred worked as a salesman for Eastern Steel/Olympic Steel in Milford, CT, where he was known as a no-nonsense guy who uplifted the morale of his peers and was a well-liked and respected salesman in the steel industry. Outside of work, he enjoyed summers spent with his family on Martha’s Vineyard, where he loved to relax on the porch of the “Blue House,” watching the world go by, as well as going on family outings to the beach, out to dinner, and walks to the pier. After many years, Alfred reconnected with his cousin and her family, and had many wonderful trips up to New Hampshire and Maine, and made beautiful life-long memories.
Alfred served as Treasurer and Ways and Means Chairman for the Cheshire High School Band Parent Association and as an usher and collection plate volunteer at Cheshire Lutheran Church. After retirement, he found peace in the simple pleasures of life and could often be found reading the newspaper in his driveway and waving hello to the neighborhood children. A passionate fan of the Jets and Mets, he also enjoyed cheering on the UCONN Girls Basketball team alongside Helen.
Alfred was a loving father to Peter and his wife, Rebecca, of Cheshire, and Lisa and her husband, David, from Colorado. He was a cherished Opa to his four grandchildren, Hannah, Myles, Luke, and Noah, with whom he shared countless joyful moments, including playing games and watching them excel in their sports and activities.
Alfred will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his loyalty, kindness, and humor. Friends are invited to greet his family at the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 So. Main Street, Cheshire, CT 06410, on Friday, July 18, 2025, from 4 PM until 7 PM. His Funeral Service will be held at the Cheshire Lutheran Church, 660 W. Main St., Cheshire, on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 11 AM; please meet directly at the church. Inurnment will follow at the Cheshire Lutheran Church Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, The National Kidney Foundation and The American Diabetes Association.
